Common Interview Questions And How To Answer Them

1. Tell me about yourself?

Keep your answer focused on work-related themes. Mention a few pertinent personal aspects but try keeping these to a minimum unless asked specifically.

2.  Why did you leave your last job?

It is important to be honest however confine your answer to avail better opportunities. If the reason you left is a negative one, be tactful in your response.

3.  What are your weaknesses?

Do not list all your problems and personality disorders at once. Rather focus on one “weakness” that could be a strength in disguise.

4.  What are your strengths?

Focus on your strengths that relate directly to the position you are interviewing for. It is good to be confident however there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Be prepared with examples of how these strengths have aided your success previously.

5. What do you know about our company and the type of work we do?

Prepare for the interview by conducting research on the company – look at their website, read up on recent news articles and familiarise yourself with their current projects/products/services.

6. Describe your management style?

Be honest about your specific management approach and focus on aspects such as communication, motivation, leadership and team work.

7. Why do you think you are suited to this position?

In your response try to emphasise your experience and skill set in relation to the requirements for the position, but be specific and relevant.

8. Do you work well under pressure?

Back up your affirmative answer with examples of your past achievements in pressured situations.

9. What motivates you in your job?

Do not answer this question in relation to salary. Rather call attention to work environment, project success, achievement of targets and KPIs.

10.  Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Relate your answer to your vision and goals for the future ensuring they are in line with the position you are interviewing for and your potential employer. Companies want to invest in candidates who will remain with them for a long period.

11.  What are your salary expectations?

Do not undersell yourself but at the same time you do not want to price yourself out of the market. Ensure you have an idea of what is market related for the position taking into account your current/previous salary.

12.  Do you have any questions for us?

Make a list of questions when conducting your company research. Some of these questions may already be addressed during the interview so ensure you have a few in mind.

In answering all interview questions it is imperative you are prepared, honest, professional, focused and relevant.
